How Does Dry Needling Work In Ottawa?

This treatment method is used by our registered physiotherapists as a way to relieve pain.

When performing dry needling, our physiotherapist will insert a sterile needle through the skin, into the underlying muscles that have been affected, in order to relieve pain, decrease muscle tension, and improve mobility.

While it is a common misconception, dry needling is not acupuncture. It is based on a modern scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.

While there are some similarities, dry needling is strictly based on Western medicine principles and research. It provides an environment that enhances the body's ability to heal, ultimately reducing pain in the process.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

It may, but it is highly variable – pain is sensed differently by everyone. If IMS or dry needling is the right approach for you, you will experience a “twitch response” with the insertion of the needle.

This is comparable to a quick muscle cramp or ache. The 24-48 hours following a dry needling treatment may also result in muscle soreness, which should go away on its own.

Sore muscles can be treated at home by continuing to move, just as you would following a strenuous workout – the muscle soreness goes away with light use.

How Will I Benefit From Dry Needling?

There are a large variety of musculoskeletal issues that can be treated with dry needling. When paired with our traditional exercise-based physiotherapy treatments and advanced manual therapy techniques, we have found that the vast majority of our patients achieve the pain-free goals they were aiming towards.

After conducting a comprehensive evaluation to assess the nature of your condition, our physiotherapist will let you know if dry needling is the best course of treatment for you.

We have used dry needling to treat several diverse conditions, from persistent pain sufferers to athletes experiencing recurrent muscle pulls or tightness that prevents them from training or competing.

FAQS on IMS / Dry Needling

What is a complete assessment?

To determine the source of pain and the best approach to treatment, our physiotherapists at Amped Physiotherapy perform a complete assessment including complete medical history, range of motion, and other biomechanical assessments.

How often should I receive Dry Needling?

If you are a good candidate for IMS treatment, sessions are usually scheduled once per week to allow time for the body to heal between sessions.

What is Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)?

IMS or dry needling is used to treat neuropathic pain which is caused by irritation or pressure on the nerves, causing muscles to become shortened and hypersensitive.

How many IMS treatments do I need?

The number of sessions required varies, depending on factors such as length of time a problem has been present, age, and general health.

How does IMS treat neuropathic pain?

IMS is able to treat neuropathic pain by desensitizing affected nerves and muscles using acupuncture needles.

What are the benefits of using a needle?

Inserting the needle creates a minor therapeutic injury to the area, stimulating the body to increase local circulation and activate its healing mechanisms.

What are the benefits of IMS?

A broad range of musculoskeletal problems is now successfully treated using the relatively new technique of Intramuscular Stimulation.
